Curhat is an Indonesian term meaning to pour out one’s heart. It refers to the act of sharing thoughts, emotions, and lived experiences openly to be witnessed, understood, and met with presence.

NusaHaus is a community-led cultural hub rooted in Nusantara identity and the Southeast Asian diaspora.
Through gatherings, conversations, and collaborative programming, NusaHaus fosters connection, cultural expression, and collective care, creating a sense of home beyond borders. NusaHaus is open to anyone seeking belonging, cultural connection, and community, including allies who share these values.

about the program

Curhat is a virtual open group therapy space for Nusantara diaspora in Canada to slow down, reflect, and connect around identity, cultural roots, and lived experience. Each 75-minute session, offered once a month, provides guided reflection and shared dialogue where participants can express what is often held quietly, including stories, emotions, questions, and parts of self shaped by culture and creativity. The group emphasizes presence, relational safety, and mutual witnessing, offering space to explore how identity and creative selfhood intersect, both individually and collectively.

This program welcomes Nusantara and Southeast Asian communities from all walks of life, embracing people of all ages, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, and lived experiences.

who is leading the group?

group therapy for malaysian, indonesian creatives

Hi! I’m Leifennie (she/her), a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). You can read more about me here. I have been privileged to travel and live in a variety of international contexts. I spent a significant part of my upbringing in Malaysia and Indonesia, and each experience instilled in me a deep appreciation for different cultures and broadened my perspectives. I continue to learn to appreciate and embrace my Chinese and Southeast Asian heritage.

Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, my professional journey was woven into the dynamic fabric of the film industry. I was involved both in front of and behind the camera, where creativity, storytelling, and human experience became my passion. The film industry allowed me to express myself artistically while connecting with diverse narratives that resonated across borders.

As an uninvited settler in Canada, I understand the push and pull of honoring where you come from while navigating the expectations and norms of the dominant culture. This experience of being part of a diaspora has given me a deep awareness of identity in motion. It is through this tension that I have learned to navigate cultural differences with curiosity and care, and to embrace the aspects of my heritage that feel most authentic and grounding. This lived experience allows me to support others in exploring their own cultural identities with insight, empathy, and confidence.

As a trauma and somatic therapist, I now specialize in supporting others to move from protection to connection. My goal for this program is to cultivate a nurturing and encouraging space for self-exploration and expansion, while gaining the practical tools to flourish, both as a creative, person, and community. We all deserve the opportunity to embrace ourselves fully, show up authentically, and experience the power of collective healing alongside others.

Curiosities you might have…

  • New participants are welcome to join at any session, but attending at least three sessions is encouraged. This allows you to build trust, form meaningful connections, explore your identity and creativity more deeply, and practice relational skills in a safe and supportive community where everyone’s experiences are witnessed and valued.

  • Yes, confidentiality is expected of all group members. What’s shared in the group stays in the group, both during the process and after the program ends. The main exception to confidentiality is if someone’s safety is at risk, in which case action will be taken to protect their well-being. This commitment to confidentiality allows for a safe, trusting space where participants can dive deep into their experiences without fear of judgment or external disclosure.

While I can’t guarantee the actions of every participant, if something shared ever leaves the group, we will address it openly and safely.

  • Yes, you can! Before that happens, we’ll have a discussion to check in with how we feel about it and address any concerns that might arise. Your past or current therapeutic work with me will not be mentioned without your permission. Extra care will be taken to ensure that anything discussed in your individual sessions doesn’t carry over into group therapy, maintaining the integrity of both experiences.

  • Some insurance providers include group therapy in their coverage. To confirm coverage under your benefits plan, consult with your insurance provider or workplace regarding group therapy provided by Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) or Canadian Certified Counsellors registered with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). This ensures you have accurate information about your reimbursement options.

  • Payment for services is due at the end of each session and you will be sent an official receipt. Fees are processed through credit card securely kept on file.

  • Life can be unpredictable and unexpected circumstances may arise. Therefore, it is important for me to maintain transparency and for you to understand the cancellation policy before working together.

To avoid being charged the full fee, please reschedule or cancel more than 48 hours in advance.

If a rescheduling or cancellation occurs within the 48-hour window but more than 24 hours before the session, a charge of 50% of the session fee will apply.

If a rescheduling or cancellation occurs within the 24-hour window, the full session fee will apply.

The same rules apply if I need to reschedule or cancel a session. If I reschedule or cancel our session within the 24 to 48-hour window, your session is offered at 50% off. If I reschedule or cancel our session within the 24-hour window, your session is free of charge. This policy ensures fairness and accountability in scheduling.

  • Fill out the form below with the dates you’d like to join. We’ll then set up a free 15-minute exploration session to connect, hear about your goals, answer any questions, and make sure we vibe well together. It’s a chance to see if this group feels like the right fit for you. I look forward to chatting with you! :)
